Delair School Activities

Third grade students annually hold their "Volcano Day". Each child has the chance to describe how they designed and made their volcano and then go through the process of having it erupt. This activity organized by third grader teacher, Ms. Rudd, is always a highlight of the school year. Parents and friends are invited to the school. The students work hard planning and developing their volcano and are quite excited to have an audience to see them explode.

The Strings Orchestra is an important part of the Instrumental Music Program. Students work hard to learn their lessons and they participate in both the Delair Winter and Spring School Concerts.

Students and staff worked together in partnership with the Perkins Center for the Arts of Moorestown to design and create a mosaic mural for the hallway wall outside the library. Working on the student selected theme, Unity Through Diversity, the students planned the design, cut mosaic tiles and attached them to the wall. The final step of the project was to grout and polish the mural.

Delair's Lightspan program uses interactive technology and provides each 4th grade basic skills student with a Sony Play Station plus a variety of language arts and mathematics CDs to practice skills at home.Weekly progress is monitored with the help of parents. The majority of the students involved showed a significant improvement in test scores.

Ladies and gentlemen -- Are your cars ready?

These are the words that were heard by both parents and students as they gathered in the Multi-Purpose Room of Delair Elementary School for their Lego Car Race Math Fun Night. The race is geared toward 3rd and 4th grade students. Students were given LEGO car kits and asked to design their own racer.

After they had a prototype built, they tried it out on the track and then headed back to the drawing board to made modifications with the help of their moms and dads. The goal of the "race" is to see whose car can go the furthest. The young people left the evening with a better understanding of the engineering principles in designing and constructing a race car and an opportunity to invent something, but most of all, a great, fun-filled evening spent with their parents.

T E A M - Teamwork, Education, Attitude, Motivation makes up the Formulation for Success. As part of Delair School's character education program, a visit from the Philadelphia Flyer's Mr. Bob Kelly and members of the Flyers team was arranged for the students. The students learned about the importance of people working towards a common goal and how it will be helpful to everyone. Phlex, the mascot from the Philadelphia Phantoms was also on hand to work with the students to help the children to understand the importance of teamwork. Learning to work together is a lifetime skill that should never be forgotten. This was a wonderful program for all who attended.

The Delair School's mission is to serve the Delair community and the families of Pennsauken Township. The staff and students take pride in the state of the art building, which houses eighteen classrooms, two resource rooms, and three special education classrooms. We embrace many new students, who quickly become integral parts of the Delair School family.

Teaching and learning continue to operate at an optimum level, and the entire staff works as a team to raise the educational experience to new heights. We believe that all children can and will learn. Although children learn differently and at variable rates, the positive and nurturing environment encourages a learning community that will allow the principal, teachers, and school families to work together to help children become:

-responsible for their own behavior
-self-directed and life-long learners
-effective communicators and problem solvers
-respectful of themselves and others
-contributing citizens

Our curriculum is diverse and interesting. The literature-based approach to teaching language arts gives students a wealth of information, including many writing activities at all levels. Kindergarten students use journal writing as an opportunity to explore written language in a supportive environment, in which they learn by doing. In addition to the Basic Skills Program, we continue to implement a new mathematics program throughout the grade levels. Fourth grade students learn about regions of the United States in social studies, and a hands-on approach in science creates interest and excitement. Creative learning also takes place in our special area subjects. Students participate weekly in vocal music, art, physical education, band, computers, and science lab.

The fourth grade students have an opportunity to participate in the Lightspan Program, which helps prepare them to be successful on the New Jersey Assessment of Skill and Knowledge (NJ ASK4). The Lightspan Program connects school and home, utilizing a curriculum-based educational software program. It combines solid comprehensive curriculum, language arts and mathematics content with the motivational power of compelling stories, engaging characters and challenging interactivity.

Our school strives to recognize positive behavior and achievement. In addition to verbal praise, the students receive certificates for perfect attendance, honor roll, and good behavior.

Parents are vital members of our school team. We encourage their involvement both at home and in school. The PTA is very supportive in many ways, providing activities, which include fundraising for field trips, assembly programs, and student incentives. The members of the PTA manage the school store, maintain book fairs, and volunteer in the classrooms. The school makes a special effort to create and promote a good relationship between home and school.
