The newly refurbished Burling School reopened its’ doors to students on September 5, 2007. The school is on one level and features seven classrooms, a Science Lab, an Art Room, and All-Purpose Room. There is a classroom for each grade K to 4 and rooms for two special needs classes.
At Burling School, we believe that the children are our future and we want children to grow to be life long learners. Effective teaching and learning in a safe and orderly environment is a top priority. The school is small enough so that this teaching and learning takes place in an intimate, empathetic setting.
Parents, guardians and the community play an integral part in the education of the students. We welcome their participation as they join us as partners in the educational process.
Block Language Arts scheduling, featuring Guided Reading and Literacy Centers is a focal point of each classes’ day. Language Arts lessons feature emphasis on comprehension skills in reading. Writing, vocabulary development, phonics, spelling and handwriting is also stressed. Mathematics, social studies, and science are integrated into classroom lessons throughout the term. The Art Program not only focuses on the basic elements of art but also with the interrelationship of the entire instructional program.
Instrumental and vocal music is taught to the students. Music teachers provide opportunities for students to participate in assemblies and performances within the school community and community at large. Winter and Spring Concerts are always a highlight for everyone.
Burling School houses twenty-eight lap-top computers for each class to use during technology time. New textbooks in the area of Social Studies were distributed to the grades.
An elementary guidance counselor is available to help students determine various ways of identifying solutions to academic and social problems. Students in third and fourth grade are chosen as PeaceKeepers. They are on duty during the day to help children solve minor problems.
Character Education is emphasized through the teaching of the Second Step Program to all. Values assemblies are held once a month in order to reward positive behavior by students.
A registered nurse is on duty throughout the school day. Medical records are kept by her and all medical inquiries are addressed by her.
Our Cultural Arts Program seeks to enrich the instructional program through its’ diversity. The new PTA at Burling is already very active. The PTA will fund informative educational and entertaining programs during the course of the term. These include character education programs, safety programs, science programs, and programs on self-esteem.
The business and visual arts community is also an important part of our school. Companies, such as J & J Snack Foods, Old County Buffet, and Perkins Center for the Arts provide students with activities and incentives throughout the year.
Students are encouraged to be active members of the community. Food drives and clothing drives have already been conducted to support local families in need.
At Burling School, we believe that the best discipline is self-imposed. Students should learn the golden rule and assume responsibility for their actions. We believe that parents are a vital part of their child’s education and the most effective instructors of self-discipline.
We welcome parents to visit our school to see first hand what a wonderful, nurturing environment is created by a devoted and dedicated faculty.
